Ben Sanders
Items
July 6 – July 28, 2019
Items is a solo exhibition of 14 sculptural wall works by Los Angeles-based artist Ben Sanders. Sanders and his father, a life-long metal fabricator, make huge steel bottle cap forms utilizing a giant hydraulic press. Each form is then given a detailed enamel paint job, with imagery culled from disparate sources, ranging from foreign food packaging to defunct cult websites. For this exhibition, Sanders is transforming the gallery into a multi-colored environment in which to display his new bottle caps. This is his second exhibition at Left Field.
Ben Sanders was born in 1989 in Arcadia, California. His practice is multi-disciplinary; exploring traditional drawing and painting, sculpture, murals, and immersive environments that often double as sites for social experiences. The most recent of these experiential projects was a five-year-long run of secret experimental cocktail bars in Los Angeles. His work is heavily influenced by cooking and the cultures and traditions surrounding food.
He received his B.F.A. from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. His work has been exhibited throughout the country, most recently at Ochi Projects and Gagosian Gallery in Los Angeles, Asya Geisberg in New York, Carl and Sloan in Portland, and LVL3 in Chicago. He has shown internationally in London and Vancouver. His work has been commissioned by clients including Nike, Dropbox, Louis Vuitton, Bloomberg, and The New York Times.
